Well what a mistake we made choosing A. N. Deringer. 100 years of experience wasn't enough to help us navigate the importation of a single 20 foot container without incurring a tariff of $30,000.

As a start-up, new to importing, we researched customs brokers thoroughly and chose A. N. Deringer because of their self-proclaimed experience and expertise. We entered into a contract with Deringer 4 months prior to the arrival of our container (2 months prior to shipment date from origin).

We provided Deringer with all the HTS codes, along with pages and pages of additional documentation about the manufacturer and products we were to import 2 months prior to shipment of origin. We were responsive to all their requests in a very timely manner.

Unbeknownst to us they did NOTHING on our account until two days before our container was due to arrive in Montreal. And then calmly let us know that we would have to pay $30,000 in TRQ for one of the products we were importing.

When we registered our surprise, disappointed and absolute frustration with their lack of proactive, timely information we were met with silence. And in the days following the shocking information regarding the unforeseen tariff, we received rushed and endless requests from Deringer for additional information (a lot of which we had already provided).

When we contacted Deringer management to express our disappointment with their professionalism on multiple fronts, we were informed that we should have used their consultancy service to receive proactive, timely information. Apparently their customs brokerage services does not manage this type of information. What a joke!

We will never use the services of A.N. Deringer again. And we advise you - if you are considering them as a customs broker - not to either. The 'team' we worked with was A. N. Deringer's Highgate Springs team in Vermont.
