What is an Izakaya

The term “Izakaya” originates from Japan and translates roughly to “gastropub” or “small pub.” However, it represents far more than just a place to grab a drink. An Izakaya is a social hub designed for enjoying a variety of small dishes—often sharing plates—paired with alcoholic beverages. Think of it as a relaxed, informal setting where conversation and connection are paramount. Izakaya’s typically offer a diverse menu, ranging from savory grilled skewers and seafood to pickled vegetables, rice dishes, and, of course, a wide selection of Japanese beers, sake, and shochu.

Izakaya Benicia’s Specialties and Offerings

Izakaya Benicia specializes in Japanese cuisine, providing a carefully curated menu that showcases the best of Japanese culinary traditions. Their offerings extend beyond typical Japanese fare, catering to a wider range of palates. Specialties include a selection of beautifully presented bento boxes – frequently cited as an excellent value – and a range of small plates designed for sharing. Specific recommendations often include the spicy cucumbers, a refreshingly tart and subtly spicy appetizer; the tsukemono (Japanese pickles), which offer a delightful combination of sweet, sour, and salty flavors; and the tataki nigiri, a thinly sliced raw tuna appetizer served with a delicate soy-based sauce. Beyond these flagship items, guests can explore a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, seafood, and vegetarian options. They also boast a comprehensive selection of alcohol, encompassing Japanese beers, sake, and wine, allowing patrons to perfectly complement their meal.

This is one of the places that I've been supporting through COVID. The quality of food is always great, despite the supply chain issues. The bento box is the best deal, but I find the nuances, are more important - like the toasted rice in the green tea or the ogo seaweed.

I recommend the spicy cucumbers, the tsukemono and the tataki nigiri.

Hubby and I came in for lunch for the first time in a few years today, and it was BAD y'all. The place was super dirty!!! There was a loudly sticky floor in the front entry, and there was food all over the floor in the dining room....like, rice & bits of food around literally every table in view. There is some sort of white, plastic siding on all of the walls that was covered in grime; it appeared to be a combination of sauces and potentially kids wet/sticky finger smudges? BLECH. Also, the random hip hop music was loud and distracting...no chill here. Lastly, the food preparation felt rushed & lazy. The rolls were super loose, and we could smell the tuna before it even hit our table. In a weird first, the seaweed used to wrap the inside of the rolls was SUPER CHEWY, so much so that it was hard to chew & swallow. And the texture of the fish could best be described as warm and mushy, the strong smell was also pretty suspect. Super bummed at the quality, and at $75 w/o drinks or tip, we expected more. We won't be back.

Food made with quality ingredients. Sushi was the absolute best. Two off menu requests......granted by this wonderful women. The ginger was delicious, you could tell it was high quality. All the fish was fresh and the tempura light and crispy. Tasted lotus root for the first time (tempura,) it was different, but pleasant. Not really for taste, but lots of texture. Nice dinner for my niece who turned 21 today. 5 people $200 bill. Not to mention the off menu dish, and the surprise caramel fudge cheesecake. It was off menu too, so don't bother asking! 🤤 Lion King good, and sashimi fresh and light. Go visit, good food, committed to family style service. Thank you Susie, we will all be back.

The service was pleasant but the portions were small. Expect about half the fish as any other decent sushi place. I feel like I get more meat in a grocery store sushi box. The dining area is small and not particularly clean. I've been to the other sushi restaurants in Benicia and this was the worse yet. With $10-15 rolls, I expect more.

This is hands down the best sushi in all the Bay Area in my opinion. Super fresh, very tasty and just beautifully crafted sushi overall. Prices are reasonable and staff is very friendly and courteous. Will come here again and again.
