WARNING ⚠️ - RACIST COMPANY
I am the owner of a small business. We are based out of Michigan, right next door to Illinois. One of my employees was tasked with finding a used forklift so she reached out to Jose on Facebook Marketplace. She traded a few messages with Jose and she was unable to answer his questions, so he instructed us to call the owner, Bob. That’s when I took over. I called Bob because I understand forklifts and ultimately, I’ll be the one paying for it. Bob was initially very polite. He explained he had recently gotten scammed by someone who paid with a bad cashier’s check. Bob was to call me back the next day, as he was headed to a Dental appointment.
After not hearing from Bob, I called back a few days later to follow up. A lady named Casey answered the phone. She told me that I must submit my company information and my federal tax EIN or she would not pursue any transactions. Why I asked? Aggressively she stated, “You sound just like the scammer!” Understandable, so I politely told her my company name, website, and gave her my warehouse address. I also asked if she needed my registered home address and she declined. I told her that I’m not affiliated with any scammers & we are a small, honest company. Casey stated she would research the information and call me back.
In the meantime, I had my employee reach out to Jose again for further information. Jose said I must submit my driver's license also. I explained to Jose that all our company information is available free of charge on Michigan LARA site. We have nothing to hide. Jose insisted we pay for the $12,000 forklift in cash. I explained to Jose that we do not deal in checks or pay cash for anything, and there’s no way I would drive around with that amount of cash on my person, as it can easily get confiscated by law enforcement on suspicion. I explained to both Jose and Casey that I am very comfortable sending ACH payment from our business bank account and once they are satisfied the payment is secure, I can send a truck to their location to pick up.
3 days later, I called to follow up. Casey answered the phone and transferred the call to Bob. He stated that he needs a copy of my driver's license and EIN first, but before I could answer he elevates his voice and says he looked up my company website and “why are you trying to buy a forklift from Illinois when you can buy 1 from Michigan? Go scam somebody else!” He then hung up the phone. Immediately I called back & no one would answer. I called back later in the day a few more times & they would pick up the phone & immediately hang up or place me on hold and disconnect the call.
Noteworthy comments: I am a black man. My employee that made initial contact with them was a white woman. They were willing to deal with us until they heard my voice. If you are African American, you will be racially profiled and mistreated by Material Handling Wholesale.
